9:30 AM meet at Gatekeeper’s. Join local historian Mark McLaughlin, The Storm King, on an adventure around the west shore of Lake Tahoe: learn the secrets of the lake and past residents! We’ll start out at Gatekeeper’s Museum and make our way down the west shore, stopping to look in depth at key sites. Lunch is included in the ticket price. $60 NLTHS members; $70 non-members.
We will view one the least known spectacular waterfalls in the state, Webber Falls. A short distance away we will
visit the historic site of the Henness Pass Stage station at Kyburz Flat. An interpretive trail will guide us around
the site, which dates from the 1850's. A 1/4 mile walk down a forested road will bring us to the Wheeler Sheep Camp,
the site of a Basque summer sheep grazing area dating from 1910.
Logistics: Meet at the Gatekeeper's Museum at 9:00 AM to leave via carpool by 9:15 AM

Join hike leader Jerry Misfeldt on a guided wildflower hike. Year after year, they manage to find the best, least known arrays of wildflowers in the area!

Washoe Tribe Chariwoman Wanda Batchelor and Historic Preservation Officer Darrel Cruz will tell us about the Washoe Tribe Then and Now: their history in this area—especially at the Gatekeeper’s Museum grounds— and activities and programs of the tribe today.

Join us for our annual Home Tour showcasing remarkable Lake Tahoe homes. On this tour, a basin annual event, a handful of homes open their doors to our members, allowing an up-close-and-personal view of craftsmanship and history. Traditionally we offer food and drink at one home on the tour. Wear comfortable shoes that can come on and off easily.
NLTHS members $50 before 7/29; $55 after.

Donner Pass Train Tunnels: At this historic spot high in the Sierras we will review the history of the construction of the Central Pacific railroad over Donner Pass in the 1860's. Participants will enjoy the excitement of walking through 146 year old tunnels blasted through solid granite, while also walking along even older wagon routes. We will also get the chance to see ancient Indian rock art in the area.

Each year, American Indian basketweavers from all over the west gather at the Gatekeeper’s Museum to weave and sell their baskets. Come join us, and if you have American Indian baskets you want more information about, there will also be basket appraisers present. There will also be “Nuts to Soup” – demonstrations of acorn preparation from the raw nuts to the finished food. This is a fun and fascinating weekend of celebrating the old ways and today’s world at the same time. This year we are celebrating more than 10,000 years of constant human habitation at Tahoe City, from the original Washoe settlers today’s population of people from all over. Family friendly!

Tahoe City's Gatekeeper is alive and well, but doesn't live at the cabin anymore! Gatekeeper John Sutter and the Federal Water Master will tell us all about the history of the outlet gates and their management: come learn all about how this works, and how the rich and powerful have long vied for control of our homely gates!

Hidden Cave, Fallon, NV: We will drive to the Churchill County Museum in Fallon for a short film of Hidden Cave. Then, we will follow a Bureau of Land Management employee to Hidden Cave, 12 miles east, on the ancient shoreline of Lake Lahontan 3500 to 3800 years ago. Inside the cave we will view the layers of occupation. A short drive will take us to Grimes Point Petroglyph site, where we will view ancient Indian rock art along an interpretive trail. There are covered picnic tables for enjoying lunch.

Note: It is a 2 hour drive from Tahoe City to Fallon. We will take HWY 89 to Truckee and east on 80 to Fernley. From Fernley we will take ALT US 50 to Fallon.
